AWACS lead the way during Ramstein Flag 2024

PREVEZA, Greece - From 30 September to 10 October, the Hellenic Airbase in Andravida, Greece, will be alive with the roar of fighter jets during NATO Allied Air Command's Ramstein Flag 2024 exercise. Just 120 kilometers north, at Forward Operating Base Aktion near the town of Preveza, two NATO E-3A and one French E-3F Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft are providing crucial support for the Alliance's first flag exercise.

During Ramstein Flag 2024, NATO and French AWACS play a pivotal role in supporting 4th and 5th generation fighters in Counter Anti-Access/Area Denial (C-A2/AD) operations. These operations aim to achieve air superiority over areas where access is denied by enemy forces. The operations are characterized by engagements in hostile environments, where the freedom of movement for Allied forces can be constrained by air defense systems, ballistic and cruise missiles, enemy fighter aircraft and ships. To establish and maintain air superiority, Allied aircraft execute C-A2/AD operations by neutralizing adversary military infrastructure, deterring adversaries and removing restrictions on friendly forces to move freely in designated areas.

NATO AWACS is a key enabler for fighter aircraft in executing C-A2/AD operations. The aircrew aboard the E-3A AWACS provides a real-time recognized air picture over a vast area where access is denied by enemy forces. The AWACS radar can detect targets beyond the reach of fighter aircraft radars, significantly enhancing situational awareness for fighter pilots. NATO's 'Eye in the Sky' also serve as airborne battle space manager and provide command and control to fighter aircraft regarding enemy air movements, targeting priorities, and the locations of hostile surface and sea-based air defense systems.

Ramstein Flag 2024 provides the ultimate demonstration of NATO AWACS' determination and capacity to implement and execute the 'Deter and Defense' concept together with more than 130 aircrafts from 12 Allies.
