Forward Operating Base Aktion under new command

"Today, executing a respective order issued by the Hellenic Air Force General Staff, I am assuming the command of Forward Operating Base Aktion," Lt. Col. Athanasios Tzortas stated on June 16, 2014, during his first speech as the new forward operating base (FOB) commander.

The guests enjoyed the Greek sunshine while attending the change-of-command ceremony at the base’s flag area.

Lt. Col. Tzortas had personal words for Aktion's military and civilian personnel and even addressed the outgoing commander with some warm words.

Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Mueller gives a speech during a change-of-command ceremony at Forward Operating Base Aktion, Greece."Pano, I want to assure you, on behalf of all, that FOB Aktion will remain open for you, because as an officer and an airman you’ve earned this privilege, giving your soul while serving the E-3A Component and the Hellenic Air Force,” Lt. Col. Tzortas said.

Lt. Col. Panagiotis Drakopoulos said during his farewell speech, "Back in 2012, as the incoming commander, I had stated this assignment was the challenge of my professional life. I had promised to all to do my best to accomplish the mission and fulfill all expectations.”

After the ceremony, Lt. Col. Drakopoulos planted an olive tree next to the flag area.

Under the command of Lt. Col. Drakopoulos, FOB Aktion supported NATO AWACS in Operations Active Endeavour, Afghan Assist and flights over the Eastern Europe area. Also, for the first time, NATO AWACS took part in the Hellenic Fighter Weapons School’s operational training and the FOB opened its doors for the public during the Hellenic Air Force’s Saint Patrons Day 2013.
